You’d better know right now : you will not find any kind of Mickey Mouse on the walls of the cave !

However, it is easy and surprising to see that the artists at that time knew how to give the illusion of movement and perspective. Such animations bring back true scenes of the life of animals painted 17 000 years ago.

In the Lascaux cave about 20 animals (mainly horses) are painted with extra legs or tails or heads.

Look for example at the series of little horses (only 2 of them are on the picture) : the legs are never drawn at the same place. Therefore the horses were not duplicated. In fact if you look at the painting from left to right you will get the impression that the horses are moving !

At Lascaux the artists also knew perspective : if you take a closer look at the chinese horses, you will see that the hind leg are not coloured in its internal part. It give the impression to be positioned behind the other leg because there is a white space between legs and the horses’ body.

Some may find it whimsical when it was made on purpose : the illusion of a continuous movement was given by the flickering light of a grease lamp.

When he used the phenomenon of retinal persistence, was the prehistoric artist inventing cartoons ?
